Ivatan Association, Inc.

The Ivatan Association, Inc. (IAI) is at its initial stage of operation having been formally established on August 4, 2010.  It was conceived over a year ago by a group of people from Batanes who reside in Metropolitan Manila primarily to undertake projects that promote and preserve the Ivatan culture and tradition.

By its name, the Association welcomes to its fold persons who are imbued with love for Batanes and its people.  It is duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock, non-profit organization with TIN No. 007-834-886-000.  Its present office address is: 38 Magnolia Street, Lumang Bayan Executive Village, Mayamot, Antipolo City.

The IAI believes that every Ivatan has a share to contribute for the good of Batanes.  The Association affords a window through which intellectual and material endowments are pooled to attain desired objectives.  Regardless of socio-political, economic status or geographical location, commitments of support are always welcome and appreciated greatly.

Paramount to the IAI’s goal is service to Batanes.  It shall cross socio-political boundaries to realize this objective. The beautiful Batanes Isles is truly a lovely place to live and that is what it is known for both locally and abroad.  The Association exists as an instrument through which this wholesome identity is kept.

As an initial undertaking, the IAI created the Ivatan Choir to sing the songs being produced into a compact disc (CD) of Ivatan songs. The group is composed of Kaydians from the different towns of Batanes. It commissioned a well-known music arranger for the eleven recorded songs, a music virtuoso who taught the choir to sing the songs as arranged, and hired a studio for the actual recording of the songs.  So much time, effort and resources have been poured in to see this project to fruition.

The Ivatan Association,Inc.  was established  with the intention that it will exist for many long years because serving Batanes and the Ivatans has no end.  It appropriates unto itself the tag as an institution that represents the interest of the Ivatans, especially those in Metro Manila.  It shall continue to harness its capabilities as an organization while remaining true to its avowed goal of servicing the Kaydians.

Batanes Islands

Picture
The Batanes island group is the smallest province in the Philippines in terms of population and land area. The capital of Batanes, Basco is 280 kilometers north of Apari, Cagayan (the tip of main island of Luzon) while it is only 190 kilometers south of  Taiwan. Batanes lies in the vast waters of the Pacific ocean where the Pacific meets China sea. An area that for generations is almost isolated from the rest of the Philippines. Batanes consist of 10 tiny islands and islets namely: Batan, Sabtang, Itbayat, Mavudis, Siayan, Diogo, North Island and Y'ami. Only the first three islands are inhabited.

The wind swept islands of Batanes are beautiful and enchanting and they are like no other in the Philippines. Since Batanes is separated from the country by miles of rough waters, the Ivatans (the name of the people of Batanes) have developed a different culture. Ivatans are honest, gentle and polite but brave and robust. They are proud of their their heritage and their land.

The landscape of Batanes is also distinct from other Philippine provinces - steep cliffs, rolling hills, deep canyons and boulder-lined shores - not unlike New Zealand in some way. But the most noticeable of all features of Batanes is the architecture of the houses - stone walled and thick thatched roofs to withstand the battering of typhoons.

The weather of Batanes is cool and windy. And it rains any month of the year. It has an almost temperate temperature from December to February where temperatures dip as low as 7 degrees centigrade. Although Batanes lies along the typhoon belt and gets hit by strong typhoons, it get it's fare share just like other provinces on the north. But in spite of the reputation of Batanes as a backward region, it now has modern conveniences like mobile phones (cell sites by Smart & Globe Telecoms), electricity and cable television but hardly any vehicles.

There are a lot of things to do and see in Batanes, swim on the many beaches, see the fishing villages, the churches and lighthouses, island hop, but best of all, it is a beautiful place to reflect and admire nature.

A trip to Batanes bestows one a feeling timelessness...an experience that will linger long after arriving back home. It makes one appreciate the simple things in life, but in a deeper sense. But be forewarned though, once you've experienced Batanes, it will haunt you to come back...
