Ivatan Choir

The Ivatan Choir (IC) prides itself as the first ever group of singers from the province of Batanes who made a determined effort to produce a compact disc (CD) of Ivatan songs.

The IC is composed of both Ivatan students and professionals. While extensive attempt was made to have a complete representation of all the towns in the choir, the absence of some cannot be helped.  The IAI welcomes those willing to share their talents after passing the usual try-out.  But membership in the IC is more of a willingness to share one’s valuable time.  The talent to sing may just be waiting to be tapped and harnessed.

When the project was originally initiated, some members had to pitch in due to the paucity of needed talent. But as time went by and as the project progressed, more talents became available and so some of those who originally formed part of the core group gladly gave way.

The IAI believes that the Ivatan talent has to be maximized for projecting, promoting and preserving our culture as a people.  Singing through the Ivatan Choir is a contribution for the good of Batanes.  Through our songs, the beauty, serenity and peace of Batanes and its people permeates the human spirit.  It enhances social harmony, spirituality and the offering of self for others in service. Our songs are also our identity as a people.

As an initial undertaking, the Ivatan Choir sang the songs that were recorded for the  production of a compact disc (CD) on Ivatan songs. The group is composed of Kaydians from the different towns of Batanes.  They are Sopranos : Sofia G. Caccam, Lilia V. Ronquillo, Jonalisa B. Gabaldon, Madeleine V. Zureta. Altos: Wella Grace L. Blacer, Mercy N. Ponce, Dyan Z. Abad, Anna Angelica A. Elica, Katrina C. Bayaras. Tenors:Miguel Mariano B. Acebes, Michael Ryan B. Cabugao, Patrick Cantero, Von Jerrik Cariaso. Basses: Kevin Cantero, Andres C. Elica, Paolo G. Caccam,Alexander D. Montoya, Paulo Gillego, German S. Caccam.

The choir is conducted by Patrick S. Frias.  Gabrielle San Pedro Rojas and Jude Balsamo were commissioned to arrange the folk songs.

The CD will be sold to both Ivatans and non-Ivatans here and abroad.  The proceeds of the project will be partly used to finance the scholarship program of the Association.
